What is Recycling ?

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, energy usage, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by decreasing the need for “conventional” waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic production.

Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” waste hierarchy.

Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, tires, textiles and electronics. The composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste—such as food or garden waste—is also considered recycling.


PET Recycling

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is the type of plastic labelled with the #1 code on or near the bottom of bottles and containers. It is commonly used as beverage bottles for carbonated soft drinks, bottled water, milk, juice, sports and energy drinks, jars, punnets, tubs and trays for food items, bottles for household, personal care and pharmaceutical products, and sheet and film for packaging.

Discarded PET bottles are collected, baled and delivered to the recycling plant. The collected bottles are sorted according to colour and polymer, de-labelled (where possible) and the caps and rings are removed, which are generally manufactured from polypropylene for which there is a demand, so they get recycled too.

Waste-Point is actively involved in a recycling operation that targets a day-to-day  recovery , sorting and baling of  a  minimum of 200 metric tons of recyclable waste materials such as Plastic  (PET Bottles), Cardboard & Paper, Steel , Aluminum and Drink Cans from solid waste stream in our facility on a monthly basis.

Our focus in this  regard  is to  help  discourage Landfilling of solid waste which is recognised as unsustainable waste management method globally, create direct employment opportunities, guarantee industrial raw material security to sustain Nigerian economy and more importantly, reduce government spending on Landfill Facility.

Can Recycling

Do you think of your empty soda cans and food cans as a natural resource? They are. We currently discard millions of tons of aluminum each year.

Apart from the economic impact, the environmental savings of recycling metal are enormous. Recycling steel and tin cans, for example, saves 74% of the energy used to produce them.

Since the cans are 100% recyclable, we could drastically reduce the energy needed to produce brand new cans simply by recycling our empties.

An aluminum can is able to be returned to the shelf, as a new can, as quickly as 60 days after it’s put into your recycling container.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours.

Card Board Recycling

Cardboard recycling is the reprocessing and reuse of thick sheets or stiff multilayered papers that have been used, discarded or regarded as waste. Cardboard boxes are usually heavy-duty or thick-sheets of paper known for their durability and hardness. Examples of cardboard include packaging boxes, egg cartoons, shoe boxes, and cereal boxes. Recycling cardboard is done as a way of keeping the environment green. The steps below provide an explanation of the cardboard recycling system.

The main types of cardboard we find at home are corrugated cardboard (i.e. packing boxes) and the types used for food and drink packaging – such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, cardboard sleeves or boxes from ready meals etc. Both types are recyclable but sometimes collected separately.
